Summary
UHV systems are proven solutions to the problem of large-scale new energy consumption, and they promote the development of new energy, and provide opportunities for the reduction of global environmental pollution and carbon emissions. Practical ways to deeply suppress the overvoltages in UHV systems were needed to reduce the construction costs. This report introduced the low-residual-voltage surge arresters developed in China in recent years, including surge arresters with low-residual-voltage metal-oxide varistors (MOVs), low-rated-voltage arresters, and controllable surge arresters. This report summarized the state of low-residual-voltage surge arresters, including advanced MOV technology, and analyzed the application effects of different kinds of low-residual-voltage surge arresters for 1000 kV UHV AC systems on suppressing switching and lightning overvoltages, and made a conclusion on the strategy for deeply suppressing overvoltages of UHV power systems.
