Summary

Paris Session 2018

Tutorial

Bottlenecks in transmission and distribution grids are causing more and more precarious situations. Non-conventional conductor change becomes an attractive option to increase the capacity. This can offer higher capacity without weight penalty and higher ampacity limits with limited or no structure changes. The use of high temperature conductors with high ampacity rating, small diameter (to stay below existing wind load limits), light weight and reduced sag characteristics can be attractive. Local line design standards and conditions will need to be taken into account as these will have a significant impact on the type of the high temperature conductor chosen.
