Summary

This paper presents the surface discharge characteristics of epoxy resin insulation which is used for dry-type power transformers, under non-uniform electric field distribution. Quartz-sand-reinforced epoxy resin insulation either with or without grids were considered in the study, The experimental and simulation studies were conducted to investigate the surface discharge characteristics of the insulation. Laboratory studies comprised determination of partial discharge level, corona inception voltage, AC surface flashover voltage and corona pulse count measurements determined for several electrode configurations. Electrostatic field and electric potential distributions were investigated by using a 2D axe-symmetrical model in simulation studies. Finally, the concordance between the simulation and experimental results were evaluated.
