Summary

Recognizing the potential value of the experience gained from HVDC transmission systems across the industry, CIGRE Study Committee 14 established Working Group 04, which was later renamed as Advisory Group 04 (AG B4.04 - HVDC and FACTS Performance), with terms of reference that included the responsibility of collecting data on HVDC systems in commercial service. It was considered that such information could be useful in the planning, design, construction and operation of new projects. Additionally, it was envisioned that sharing operational performance data would benefit those managing existing HVDC links and those planning new ones. It became evident that such reports should be prepared using a standardized approach, enabling the accumulation of data from multiple systems over time to establish a reliable basis for performance evaluation. There have been two iterations of the Protocol issued as Technical Brochures TB 346 and TB 590 for reporting. As HVDC technology has advanced over the years, this updated revision extends the Protocol to address emerging developments, such as DC Grids, Multi-terminal Systems, DC Switchgear and Switching Stations, and Offshore Wind DC Transmission.
