Summary

A reference setup has been developed for on-site ‘system calibration’ of trans-former loss measurement (TLM). The reference setup exploits a unique combination of analogue current comparator technology and digital sampling techniques to generate test currents with stable and accurate phase angle with respect to the applied high voltage, mimicking a load with adjustable loss to the TLM system. After optimisation of the algorithms used in the digital feedback loop of the reference setup, phase noise levels of better than 5 ?rad (0.05 % at PF = 0.01) are achieved under on-site conditions. The total uncertainty of the reference setup is 25 ppm (0.25 % at PF = 0.01) at 100 kV and 2 kA, sufficient for meeting the most demanding TLM system calibration requirements.
