AC/DC corona characteristics of the conductors in an indoor corona cage



In this study, AC/DC corona characteristics of the conductors are investigated by using an indoor corona cage. The cage has 60 cm in diameter and 300 cm in length, and suitable for the measurements up to 100 kV rms. It comprised two guard electrodes with 25 cm in length to minimize the terminal effects of the conductors. The conductors with diameters of 1.3 mm, 1.8 mm, 2.2 mm, 2.8 mm and 7 mm are taken into consideration during the experiments. For each conductor, corona characteristics such as corona inception voltage, corona current, corona pulse counts are measured. Moreover, power losses due to corona are calculated. The measurements and calculations are performed under AC, positive DC and negative DC voltages, and the results are evaluated in order to see the effects of conductor size, and the polarity and the type of the applied voltages. The temperature and the humidity of the test room are kept constant throughout the tests. In addition to experimental studies, several simulations are performed by using Finite Element Method. A 2D axe-symmetrical model of the conductor and the corona cage is considered, and the field distributions are obtained for each conductor configuration.
