Electric field calculations and measurements on composite insulating materials with and without defects

This paper presents the calculation and measurement of electric field in composite materials used for outdoor insulation. The goal of the study was to determine if electric field changes could be used reliably to identify defects in apparatus. A single-ended electro-optic electric field probe based on Pockels effect, was utilized to measure the electric field. A 3-Dimensional boundary element package was used to calculate the electric field. The measurements and calculations show reasonably good agreement. Results indicate that defect detection is more reliable when the defects are conducting and located closed to the energized end when compared to other types and locations of defects.
