Simulation Study on Switching Over-voltages in HVDC Cable Transmission System



The Voltage Source Converter (VSC) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable transmission is very suitable for many special applications such as island power supply and distributed generation connection. The transient over-voltages due to switching operation, internal faults or lightning strikes have a great impact on the reliability of the VSC-HVDC cable transmission system. In this paper, the transmission and attenuation characteristics of the transient over-voltages in DC cable system under different switching and failure modes were studied. An electromagnetic transient simulating model based on a typical bipolar VSC-HVDC project was established with the transient analysis software of PSCAD/EMTDC. Three types of internal transient over-voltages in the DC cable system were simulated, which were transferred from AC side transient due to the earth fault of the link transformer, induced on the non-faulted DC pole when short circuit fault in the DC cable system, and caused by the earth fault between the bridge arm reactor and the VSC valve. The effects of the fault resistance on the transient characteristics in DC cable system were studied. The typical results show that the maximum transient voltage will reach 860 kV (2.15 p.u.) in all the three kinds of faults. The value of the fault resistance has a different effect on the magnitude of the maximum over-voltages in different fault modes. The research results can be used as references for the insulation coordination of the VSC-HVDC cable transmission system.
