Summary

Stator of hydro generators is usually designed and constructed with open slots. Winding (bars or coils) is inserted in stator core and then fixed with the non-magnetic slot wedges. The consequences of the open slots are the slots harmonics which have effect on some characteristics of the generator (Total Harmonic Distortion factor (THD), power losses, reactances, and excitation current). One of the suitable ways for reducing negative effects of slotted core (slot harmonics) is utilization of magnetic wedges. Characteristics of presently used materials for magnetic wedges as well as gained experience ensure real possibilities for application in case of the hydro generators.
