Summary

This TB presents the state-of-the-art techniques for core-type and shell-type transformer thermal modelling and makes recommendations for further improvements. It describes Thermal Hydraulic Network (THN) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, benchmark simulations of a real winding, dynamic modelling and best practices for direct measurements. It is expected that the development and use of more performant thermal modelling tools, as described in this TB, will help optimise transformer thermal design and loading.
