Summary

There is an increasing demand on space in relation to cable installations. Therefore, more innovative and space saving methods are employed. These technologies are being used increasingly due to obstacles such as buildings, motorways, rivers, traffic etc preventing the use of direct trenching operations. They may also be used because the environment impact of opening a trench is not acceptable.

The TB 770 covers the most common methods for trenchless technologies. The TB does not cover full tunnel installation as this is already covered by TB 403, Cables in Multipurpose or Shared Structures.

The methods covered are:

  • Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
  • Microtunneling / Pipe Jacking
  • Pipe Ramming and Auger Boring
  • Ploughing
