Summary
The concept of adaptive protection evolved during the 1980's. By then, digital computer based relaying was well accepted. Most relaying functions have been shown to be amenable to digital computer implementation and the satisfactory field experience with these devices has allayed the fears of protection engineers about the survivability of computer relays in the harsh environment of electric utility substations.
