Summary

To assess the health status of the electrical insulation system of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) in service, partial discharge (PD) measurements provide a preferred diagnostic tool. The operational health status of the insulation can be divided into three major categories i.e. “Normal operation”, “Deviated operation” and “Faulty operation” for which, the insulation defect type and location and the GIS operating conditions should be considered. The formulated knowledge rules to estimate the status of the insulation system in the presence of an insulation defect are discussed by collecting information on partial discharge from experiments and literature.
