Summary
Super hydrophobic coatings have recently drawn a lot of attention in research and applications towards self-cleaning property. Our previous study has presented an electric field enhanced movement behaviour of water droplet on a super hydrophobic coating. This paper aims at studying typical movement characteristics of water droplet on a super hydrophobic coating under electric field. High speed camera was employed to capture the whole movement process and deformation phenomenon of water droplet was confirmed as it moves towards electrode. The deformation phenomenon was analyzed based on electrostatic stress calculation. The influence of water droplet location and net charge on deformation of water droplet was simulated. Results show that electrostatic force distribution of water droplet becomes more inhomogeneous when water droplet moves near to electrode and when net charge inside water droplet increases respectively. Electrostatic stress simulation results are in good accordance with deformation behaviour of water droplet during movement process driven by electric field.
