Summary

Insulating oil modified by nanoparticles (i.e. nanofluid) has recently drawn considerable attention especially concerning the improvement of their electrical-breakdown strength and thermal conductivity. In this work, Fe3O4 nanoparticles with three sizes were prepared by High-temperature Decomposition. Therefore, three nanofluids were achieved by dispersing nanoparticles into insulating vegetable-oil and they were respectively labelled by the size of each nanoparticles. The dispersion stability of the nanoparticles in nanofluid was evaluated by natural sedimentation and by monitoring transmission coefficient. The electrical-breakdown strength and several dielectric characteristics, e.g. permittivity, dielectric loss, volume resistivity of these nanofluids were comparatively investigated. The results show that the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles enhances the electrical-breakdown strength but also uniforms the electric field within the nanofluids.
