Summary

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is embarking on an intensive program of substation automation for its transmission substations. ln this program, it was decided that all-existing 500kV, 275kV and strategic 132kV substations to be retrofitted with substation automation system. At the same time, all new transmission substations projects should be designed with full advantage of substation automation. As a part of the program, an establishment of the Substation Interrogation and Monitoring Center to fully manage various Intelligent Electronic Devices including protective relays, disturbance recorder, fault locator and primary equipment conditioning monitoring devices was planned and implemented.
This paper addresses the experiences in considering and integrating the existing and future relay communication between the various protective relay technologies and the substation contrai system in the substation automation environment. lt also describes the major components in establishing the Grid Protection Interrogation and Monitoring Center for enhancement of protection system management.
