Summary

The power generating units and the transmission network operate as an interactive system. Faults and switching actions in the network cause electrical system transients which stimulate torsional oscillations along the turbine generator shaft. In the past, the generator three-phase terminal short-circuit was considered as the most critical mechanical stress condition for the turbine generator unit.
