Title:

Development of sensor for studying the effect of temperature on power transmission using high voltage line

Abstracts

The safe operating limits and thermal limits of transmission line conductors are two critical parameters of thermal rating of the transmission lines. Since power transmission capability of the lines are restricted to the operating limit of the conductor, increasing the safe operating limits of the conductor marginally above the fixed operating limit would help in transmitting more power to load centres. The actual rise in conductor temperatures is due to heating effects of current, ambient temperature and wind flow. Since ambient temperature and wind flow are two critical parameters of the ampacity of the transmission line, the effects of the ambient temperature and wind flow on the power transmission capability are also considered. The paper discusses the field results of the effect of temperature on power transmission capability of 400 kV systems for two different types of ACSR conductors for safe operating limit of 85° C. A conceptual design of temperature monitoring system (TMS) and methods of computation of temperature are also briefly discussed in this paper.
