A thermo-magnetic approach to evaluate the effectiveness of magnetic field shielding of underground lines



There is an increasing worldwide concern about the problems caused by magnetic fields generated by underground power lines, and higher restrictions are imposed on the allowable levels. To obey the legislation, different techniques are applied to mitigate the magnetic fields generated by such lines. However, in some situations, besides reducing the field, the shielding devices may cause an additional temperature rise on the cables, thereby leading to a reduction at the line current rating. In this paper a methodology, based on the Finite Element Method, is proposed to evaluate the magnetic field and the temperature distribution around an underground transmission line, considering the shielding device. Both the thermal and the magnetic models are coupled so that the variation of the electrical conductivity with temperature of all elements in the system can be taken into account.
