ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF FIELD GRADING MATERIAL COMPOUNDED SILICONE RUBBER

 

Abstracts

Micro and nano-material compounded polymers have been widely researched and adopted by industry. These additives improve significantly the mechanical, electrical, thermal performances of the polymer compound. It has been recently demonstrated that application of non-linear resistive grading coating material in outdoor polymeric insulators can result in improved electric field distribution around the high stress regions. In this paper, microvaristor material in compounded silicone rubber is investigated with the view to application for redistributing highly non-uniform electric field in outdoor HV insulation systems. Composite samples were prepared from silicone rubber materials loaded with ZnO microvaristor powder. The prepared samples have dimensions 50mmx50mmx5mm at 70wt% concentration of the ZnO microvaristor material. The test samples were subjected to alternating current tests to investigate the electrical characteristics of such material. A technique was developed to discriminate the resistive and capacitive components of the total currents. The results showed that the samples exhibited desirable non-linear conduction at this level of microvaristor concentration.
